We have a cat who just turned 18 years and she has matted fur but we havent done anything yet. She doesnt go outside and stays away from the other cats. The matted fur cant be to healthy. Bacteria I imagine can grow in the matts. I think I'm going to give her a haircut. She defends herself just fine if she needs too.

Seriously...the people saying this is cruel are morons. What is cruel is letting a cat be in pain because of matted fur - or in my case, letting my cat be in 43 degree celcius heat during summer wearing his thick persian coat. He ADORES being shaved, he is like a kitten again and the relief from the heat is palpable. I get it done by a vet, under sedation and it is very common practice in countries with very hot summers. Imagine if the airconditioning broke down one day and he wasn't shaved? Now that...would be cruel. And btw he does look hillarious when he's shaved...so?

This is not usually a matter of neglect or people who don't groom. My cat was adopted from the humane society about 3 years ago and she was about 7 months old (no longer a kitten). She is very long haired and will not let me brush certain areas (under arms-stomach) so she has some matting. I have had cats my entire life, but not one with this long of hair and/or that wouldn't let me brush it,and I have never had one that created mats. The mats can be bothersome and painful if let go too long. I am having her shaved for the first time next week. I will attempt after that to try to groom as it grows out. But the vet agreed, some cats need it and some owners have it done every year. Rhonda

to the people who say they dont groom their animals and they end up like this, well you're wrong. i have a long haired cat and i do groom her to the best of my ability but she does not like it and therefore i know its not a thorough brushing but she does get matted. i take very good care of my cats and cats who constantly lick themselves will gets matted hair much quicker than cats who dont

This is terrible! The cats look shell shocked and fearful. They will act out after something like this is done to them. Appearance matters a lot to cats as does their dignity. Whoever did this does not love cats.

well, people who don't groom their cats properly are the ones (mainly) who do it, to remove matted hair. Notice that all of those cats are long-haired?

And once or twice, I've heard of cats (and dogs) having to be shaved to treat a skin condition.
